Comrade Nirmal Chartterjee was gifted with exceptional qualities of witticism and clinching arguments in debates with the opposition from his student days to the days in Parliament. In West Bengal in 1940’s the communist students had to fight against stalwarts like M.N. Roy, Soumendra Nath Tagore who distorted Marxism in their own fashion . Comrade Chatterjee who won party membership in 1941 equipped himself with principles of Marxism which he applied with alacrity in the mass movements of the students and workers. He led Trade Union Movement in the firm where he worked. He played an active role in working out of the Second Five Year Plan in the Indian Statistical Institute under Professor P. C. Mahalanobis.
Comrade Chatterjee throughout his life propagated the tenets on Marxism-Leninism and worked in the party like a disciplined soldier. Till his death he was known leader of 24-parganas District Committee. As a party Teacher he worked in many parts of the State to educate Communist activists and organizers.
His was 84 and survived by his wife and lifelong companion Mrs. Mira Chatterjee who was one of the most veteran Communist delegates in the last Party Congress.
